How Giving to Others Can Also Bring Success
A story, quote and lesson about a generous Italian chef
Doing good and doing well.
Helping others and growing a business—two things often seen as opposing forces. But for the Boiardi brothers, founders of Chef Boyardee, the opportunity to do both came during one of history’s most turbulent times: World War II.
When the war broke out, the U.S. military needed a reliable way to feed millions of soldiers overseas. That’s when the War Department turned to the makers of an already popular canned pasta brand: Chef Boyardee.
Ettore “Hector” Boiardi and his team answered the call, scaling up their operations to an unprecedented level. At its peak, the company was producing up to 250,000 cans of food per day—feeding both troops and American families back home.
Scaling up at such a pace required thousands of workers. The company became a lifeline for many, providing steady jobs when they were needed most. This wartime effort not only helped sustain soldiers in battle but also helped Chef Boyardee grow into a household name.

After the war, Boiardi faced a difficult decision: either lay off the many workers he had hired or sell the company. Choosing the latter, he sold the business to American Home Foods in 1946 for nearly $6 million, ensuring its long-term success.
It’s easy to see business success and generosity as opposing forces, but the Boiardi brothers proved otherwise. By embracing the opportunity to help during the war, they didn’t just contribute to a greater cause—they also strengthened their company in the process.
“One of the kindest, most gentle people you ever met. He was soft spoken, well mannered, always impeccably dressed, elegant and social. He was just lovely, honestly.”
- Anna Boiardi, speaking of his great-uncle Hector Boiardi.
Chef Boyardee’s story highlights a simple but powerful truth: opportunities to help others and opportunities for success don’t have to be at odds. Sometimes, they go hand in hand.
By focusing on providing value—whether to soldiers, workers, or customers—Boiardi built something bigger than himself. His legacy continues today, proving that generosity and ambition can fuel each other.
So now I ask you:
Where in your life or work might giving more also help you grow?
Enjoyed it a lot
